Orchestra Director, Gregory Rupert
Gregory Rupert is a 1986 graduate of the Juilliard School
of Music where he received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in
Viola Performance. While at Juilliard, Mr. Rupert studied viola with William Lincer, former Principal Violist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and
Samuel Rhodes of the Juilliard String Quartet.
An active freelance musician, Mr. Rupert is currently the Principal Violist in the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Principal Violist in the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Rupert has taught for 21 years in the Fairfax County Public Schools. From September 1987 until June 2000 he was the Orchestra Director at West Springfield High School and Washington Irving Middle School in Springfield, VA. During this tenure, the orchestras at these schools consistently received Superior performance ratings at regional, national and international competitions. In September 2000 Mr. Rupert began the orchestra program at Westfield High School in Chantilly, VA. The school orchestral program now includes four string orchestras and a full symphony orchestra.
Mr. Rupert is in demand as guest conductor/clinician and festival adjudicator in Virginia and North Carolina. In addition, Mr. Rupert maintains a small private viola studio in his home.
An avid sports fan, Mr. Rupert resides in Clifton, with his wife Anne (Director of Orchestras at Robinson Secondary School) and five sons, Benjamin, Nicholas, Nathaniel, Noah and Michael. In his spare time, he helps coach his sons’ SYA baseball and basketball teams.
